When Submarines Collide

The Atlantic Ocean covers 41.1 million square miles. So naturally, two submarines equipped with nuclear city-buster missiles had to collide in it. The statistical probabilities involved are staggering, as is the thought that Homer Simpson’s two brothers are captaining nuclear subs. Though none of the missiles were damaged, and little radiation was released, d’oh! is the last thing you want to hear from the captain responsible for a dozen multi-megaton warheads.

One possibility is that missile subs have become so stealthy that they can’t detect each other. Still, given that one of the parties involved was the French Navy (whose flagship aircraft carrier has a habit of losing its propellors), the accident investigation will prove interesting.
