Moats in the desert?

Israel has announced a unilateral cease-fire in Gaza (Hamas reciprocated soon after) and then a unilateral withdrawal just in time to spare Obama from a Middle East crisis on Inauguration Day. Now comes the bickering and negotiating and accusations over the tunnels that Hamas has used to smuggle Iranian arms across the Egypt-Gaza border.

Israel says it’s bombed many of the tunnels, but it’s inevitable that some were missed, or new ones will be quickly dug. A piece in Slate.com examines some options for blocking tunnels, such as moats (in the Sinai desert!). If the situation wasn’t so tragic, it would sound like warfare a la Monty Python.
